A typical answered question costs somewhere under 2,000 tokens, so the signup allowance covers roughly 150–180 questions on its own. If your site fields a handful of enquiries a week, the monthly top-up alone keeps you inside the free allowance indefinitely.
Busier sites will need a plan. The numbers below are deliberately plain so you can work out which one before you commit to anything.

Every price works out the same per token
$1 buys 500,000 tokens, whether you subscribe or top up. Larger plans don’t cost less per token — they simply save you topping up. Pick on volume, not on price per unit.
Bring your own key instead
The plugin is free. Use your own OpenAI, Claude or Gemini key and your provider bills you directly — no plan, no tokens, no proxy fees. You manage the provider account, and semantic search needs an OpenAI or Google key for embeddings.
Questions people ask first
How far does the free allowance actually go?
A single answered question typically costs under 2,000 tokens — the visitor’s question, the passages retrieved from your site, and the reply. So 300,000 tokens is roughly 150–180 questions, and the 50,000 added each month covers about 25–30 more. Your Account tab shows exactly what you’re using.
What happens if I run out?
The chat stops answering and shows your custom message. Top up or subscribe and it resumes immediately. Email alerts warn you before you hit zero, and the free monthly tokens arrive on the 1st regardless.
Do tokens expire?
Top-up tokens never expire. Plan allowances refresh on your billing date rather than rolling over, so a plan is worth choosing on your typical month, not your busiest.
Is indexing charged separately?
Indexing generates an embedding for each passage of your content. It’s far cheaper per call than answering a question, and you pay for it once rather than per visitor — but on a site with thousands of pages the initial index is a real one-off cost worth planning for.
How many sites can I use one account for?
Up to 5 domains per account on the hosted service. BYO mode has no domain limit, since you’re using your own provider key.
